Research Student Visa - Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a specific research visa separate from a student visa?

Germany issues a dedicated Forschungsvisum for researchers. Most other countries (UK, Australia, Canada, USA) use the standard student visa for research degree students.

Can I do paid research work on a research student visa?

Many research students receive scholarships or stipends which are permitted. Additional paid work is subject to the same part-time work rules as other student visa holders.

What is the difference between a J-1 Student visa and J-1 Research Scholar?

The J-1 Student category is for degree-seeking students. The J-1 Research Scholar is for established researchers visiting for collaborative research, usually post-PhD.

Do visiting scholars need a student visa?

Visiting scholars who are not enrolled in a degree program may need a research visitor visa or J-1 Research Scholar category rather than a student visa. Requirements vary by country.

Can a research student bring dependants?

Most countries allow spouses and dependent children to accompany research degree students. They may also have work rights. The UK Graduate Route after completion extends to dependants.
